Skydive Citrusdal 20/10/2002

Citrusdal is a valley some 160km to the north of Cape Town, famous for it's thermal springs, its fruit and to a lesser extent grape growing industry and to some for it's dropzone.
I had first come across the name Citrusdal in the U.S. whilst discussing with a couple from the Netherlands which their most favourite dropzone was. I made a mental note and thought that someday if I make it to South Africa I would have to visit and see what this dropzone would be like.
Only a few days after my arrival in Cape Town I would get my first chance to visit, together with Jim, a newcomer to the sport who I had met at the hostel.
We drove up to Citrusdal for the weekend and spent two very cold nights in the bunk houses on the dropzone for next to nothing. The evening we arrived, we joined in with the people already there on a huge braii and got to know some of the people caring for the "wellbeing" of the dropzone.
The second visit I paid to Citrusdal at the end of the year 2002 as at that time a Pilatus Porter from near Johannesburg was visiting there, hence giving the skydivers the chance to jump from 12500ft.
The scenery from the plane there is very beautiful and the people are friendly and facilities are very good, especially the braii area. Unlike the skydive centre nearer to Cape Town this is club run by and for skydivers rather than tandems and this shows. I would very much like to return there when I am back in South Africa at some point.
