After my arrival in South Africa in mid October 2002, I spent more time in Cape Town than in any other single location, hence I feel the need to put down a short and personal "best of Cape Town" list, comprising things to do and places to go.
If you are interested in my novice opinion of the awesome South African wines, I recommend you take a look at the Wine Route page.
- Climb Table Mountain on a sunny but windy day, as there will be no crowds to greet you at the top. (Bring warm and windproof clothing as well as water this is no leisurely walk you fool)
- Visit Robben Island after having read Mandela's book "Long walk to freedom". (The abridged version will do if you are running short on time)
- Watch the sun set over Camps Bay, whilst holding a refreshing alcoholic beverage on the patio of "La Med". (Try the La Med's Salad to go with your drink if you're feeling that stinging sensation in your stomach)
- Visit the vineyards in Stellenbosch with friends using your own transport, after having purchased the SA Wine Guide
pocket book. (It contains maps and addresses for you to choose from and if you're lucky, or have booked ahead you could treat yourself to dinner at the "Tokara" on Helshoogte Pass)
- Treat yourself at least once to a dinner at "The Five Flies" and book ahead. (If you can't get a reservation there try Panama Jack's if you like fish or Mme. Zingara)
- Go and see a musical at the Baxter Theatre. (UCT lower campus)
- Enjoy some refreshingly well mixed cocktails at "the Lab" on Orange St. to get the evening going. (Or to thoroughly drown your sorrows at the end of a devastating night)
- Relax on 2nd Beach after your long and adventurous night out on Long St. (It may feel cool but the sun is brutal so don't forget that sunscreen)
- On your way to the beach stop at Giovanni's Deli on Main Rd. Greenpoint and pick up some awesome bread and snacks for the beach picnic. (One of the few places with decent bread in Cape Town, among many other fine things you'll find there of course)
- Hike up to the rockpools in Gordon's Canyon and jump the high ones if you dare. (Practice lots on the lower ones before you aim high)
- Go and visit the townships during the week and with a knowledgeable guide. (You'll be able to find one at the District 6 museum if you ask around)
- Look at the sunset from Signal Hill. (Bring lots of booze so that you can handle the tons of package tourists joining you up there)

Well lots, for instance the "Sunflower Stop" my second home in Cape Town, or Catwalk.tv the fastest Internet Cafe in Africa where I spent a fair share of my time (also on Main Rd, Seepoint) and surely I have missed countless other fine things there are to do and see in and around Capetown (as for instance the picnic in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens), but once you have settled into Cape Town you tend to get stuck there very easily and fall into a bit of a trot or routine.
Not to worry I am sure I'll be back someday. But for now here are the photos I took during my stay there.
